Zahi Hawass: The Tombs of Kai at Giza. Description and Decoration

The Giza Plateau, one of Egypt’s most iconic archaeological sites, houses hundreds of tombs from the Old Kingdom as well as later periods. Built in the shadow of the royal monuments admired by the entire world, lie the tombs of people who themselves created and developed the ancient state. The two tombs of Kai, probably built for Kai’s daughters, presented in this book were excavated by Zahi Hawass, the world famous Egyptian archaeologist, and his team. The walls of the larger tomb built of limestone are covered with scenes and inscriptions in painted relief while the smaller mud brick tomb displays painted scenes that have no parallels in Old Kingdom art. The beautiful statue of Kai with his children was also found in the stone tomb, which is today on display in the Grand Egyptian Museum not far from the ancient necropolis. The publication is richly illustrated by high quality photographs, drawings and plans.
